About
Jonah Trople is a multidisciplinary artist and designer. His work is decidedly layered; A bold, playful, and deceptively simple aesthetic weaves together the ideas of magic and memory with the themes of the human condition, cosmic history, and place.
Through use of symbols and signifiers, Jonah illuminates a universal memory from the collective unconscious. Jonah’s visual vocabulary tells a story that invokes a sense of wonder and mystery referring to something ancient and ancestral.
While his themes are atavistic, he is influenced by the skateboarding and graffiti subcultures that surrounded him in his youth. In both his paintings and sculptures, Jonah employs techniques from his storied background as a sign painter and woodworker.
Jonah lives on the Big Island of Hawai’i where his current ongoing series employs the use of natural materials and practices aligned with the sacred land.
